7pm Film Screening The Red Line D.C. Project is a thought-provoking documentary about illegal art and public space. Is Washington’s metro graffiti nothing more than “visual litter” or a cause for conversation in transit? With the red line as our backdrop, a fifteen minute ride across seven metro stops demonstrates a city’s struggle with visibility and power. Buffed walls become political and random names serve as statements of rebellion. Using interviews with graffiti writers, metro riders, D.C. arts organizations and city officials, we explore the impact of graffiti and the changing aesthetics of the city. 8:00pm-930Pm Film/Discussion of MLK Streets Project
MLK Streets Project by Straight No Chaser Films -Birthed out of a well-known Chris Rock joke making fun of the violence and poverty often found on the streets named for the non-violent activist, this revealing documentary follows 13 high-school students from 5 Washington, DC high schools as they travel cross-country to observe and record, first-hand, the condition of America’s MLK streets. Narrated by Rain Pryor, the film keeps the comedy-to-cultural-commentary connection alive as it looks critically at the street-naming phenomenon, King’s legacy, and the effects of gentrification on the streets he once marched through. For a generation which has heard the “”I Have A Dream”” speech like a broken record, the film serves as a radical remix.” The Fishing School. FREE TIX

ABOUT GREEN CORPS SHORTS: During Spring 2011, through a comprehensive media arts residency with Meridian Hill Pictures, the DC Green Corps trainees produced these four short videos to express in their own voice how urban forestry and greening are helping to meet critical needs in underserved communities in Washington, DC. The trainees conducted research, interviews, learned advanced production skills including storyboarding, camera work, sound and editing. The trainees premiered their videos at the American Film Institute’s Silver Theatre in May 2010, and the films have since screened across the country.
ABOUT DISPARTE CITY: Disparate City” is a short film exploring cultural tension in DC created by gentrification, segregation, and prejudice, as well as the benefits of tolerance and understanding for District residents. The filmmaker, Jonah Best, was born and raised in the Northeast DC neighborhood of Brookland. Attending predominantly minority DC public schools throughout his education, he was the only white male in his class upon graduating from Capital City Public Charter School this year. Immersed in the city’s Black and Latino cultures, Best held a unique perspective on the city, which informed his writing for this film. The film was Best’s Senior Expedition at CCPCS, a research and outreach project the school requires for graduating seniors which helps the community and relates to students’ career interests. FREE

Pieces were selected based on how well the work fits the theme, with jurors paying attention to innovative uses of repurposed materials made into particularly high-quality art. Fine art and fine crafts are were accepted, provided they consisted of at least 75% reclaimed material.
